How much does a handyman charge to paint a room?

Hi there everyone. Titan Handyman Solutions has been asked this question “How much does a handyman charge to paint a room” or “How much should a handyman charge to paint a room” many times throughout our time. Even before we officially became a full fledge handyman service Ive been asked this question. So here it goes I’ll try to explain this the absolute best I can.

“How much does it cost to paint a room?”

To be honest with you guys it honestly depends on the size of the room/bedroom. Is it a standard 10 X 10 room or is it a master bedroom? Is the room empty or does the person painting have to move things out of the way while they paint? Do you want them to paint just the wall or the baseboards as well? Some things that home owners don’t consider is “is the wall textured”? What I mean by texture, I mean is it heavy texture. Like a heavy knock down or skip trowel type texture. Normally and orange peel type texture is pretty straight forward. But when you get into the heavier texture types the way your room needs to get painted is different. Rolling paint on for heavy textures isn’t ideal will more than likely lead to drips running down your walls. Spraying paint from and airless rig is better for heavy textures, on the flip side of that though it requires more prep time. Masking/protecting has to be checked and double checked. The spray rig or spray machine blows a lot of pressure and will most likely lift the masking that would normally be sufficient for just rolling paint on. But, I’m sure you guys came for some numbers so lets get down to it.

Well how much does it cost?

Well if you are doing it yourself, it should cost around $200-$400. That is assuming you are buying paint, primer, brushes, rollers, masking tape, proper painters tape, masking paper, masking plastic, sand paper (different grits), paint thinner (spills on anything). Im sure I missed some items for a DIY job. Its quite a bit of items just to get the ball rolling on your project.

Hiring a handyman to paint a room is going to cost more to do it. Plain and simple. Exactly how much more? I honestly cannot give you a price. Depending on who you go with they might do it for just as much as it would cost you do to it yourself. But, they most likely won’t know what they are doing and you will not be happy with it. A good quality painter knows that to deliver a great job it takes time and prep work to get a perfect product for you. Unfortunately time does cost money. It also depends on where you live. DIY prices are generally the same since you buy all your material at the local hardware store. Where the price difference comes in is, where are you located in USA. Hiring a handyman in Southern California it’ll be a huge difference in hiring a handyman in Utah. Sometimes $100’s in difference in price. Your also paying for what they know how to do. Someone who is doing the job for a budget price won’t know how to fix problems that the experienced person does. So to put it plainly…..Its not so cut and dry when hiring someone. The prices will vary, the situations will vary. All I can say on this is MAKE SURE YOU VET THEM. I will give you some questions to ask the potential person you hire.

Questions

  1. Do you fix imperfections? (some people won’t they just paint and call it done.)
  2. Do you patch anything thats needed? (I’ve been to plenty of clients homes where the painter didn’t patch any holes)
  3. Do you Primer 1st? (Plenty of painters will not primer before paint!)
  4. Do you sand between coats? (In order to get a good bond/finish the person needs to sand the primer, sand the first coat and the second coat if the client wants 3 coats.)
  5. Do you removed faceplates and covers? (some painters don’t remove the electrical covers when painting)
